The grids compilation opens up a new chapter in outlines activity. After a series of cassettes dedicated to a specific idea, the grids aims at presenting some potential directions that outlines could take. By emphasizing this artistic diversity, we constantly strive to keep it in the spirit of aesthetics developed in the groove series. As the title of the compilation indicates, it is all about creating a wide panorama of the possibilities for the label.
The first track on the A-side of the cassette is delivered by the Japanese producer, SAUCEMAN, one of the co-founders of the footwork label Booty Tune, also known as D.J.G.O. In SAUCEMAN’s last productions the concept of mixing the footwork with field recordings of birds singing is brought forward. Avtomat is one of the representatives of the Polish oramics crew, which promotes non-binary artists moving beyond heteronormative ideology. His A Mess is a grainy and vibrating construction surrounded by a layer of coldness. The producer, Terri Chan, strives to combine the two traditions, of Detroit and Chicago, which are the most important cities for electronic music. Terri (aka Tchan and dj girl) skilfully jumps between dizzy footwork and ghetto-tek tempos, however not completely restraining herself from slower rhythmics. Spirityus is an extremely intense track, wobbled between the psychedelic samples and the technoid pulse. The Polish producer, Ostrowski, after releasing in Recognition Records and Pawlacz Perski, became known as an artist with a huge musical imagination introducing many surprising elements to the 160 BPM tempo. His BL lac originates from the clicks and cuts tradition, launching a multilevel micro-narrative game. Automatisme is a Canadian sound artist, who closes the A side with a little breath. His Entrepôt 3 is a study of rhythmic details exploration.
The B side is entirely occupied by CRZKN’s C.I.A vs. W.W.F. This almost 23-minute long footwork piece has fueled outlines owner Paweł 'Paide' Dunajko’s decision to choose this specific duration of the tracks in the groove series. It was he who caused the intense and frenetic continuum of tracks dedicated to battling footworkers to be relativized and lost. C.I.A vs W.W.F is for footwork what Vladislav Delay’s Huone was for dub techno.
